Description
New Nord is a new, versatile sans serif family loosely inspired by Roger Excoffon’s Antique Olive Nord. The boldest member of the quintessentially French sans serif family has left an indelible mark on the world of graphic design and typography. As its weight and proportions imply, this towering French icon was drawn specifically for display uses. Usually, such heavy typefaces are the endpoint in the development of a type design’s range. But what happens when the script is flipped? What if you analyze what makes very bold typeface designs work, then remove the heaviness? This reverse exploration resulted in a surprising typeface that is suitable, not only for large sizes but also for text use. Reliable and sure-footed, New Nord carries your message on its strong shoulders. Its letterforms are characterized by straight lines, tense curves and a strong horizontal impetus. Paradoxically, it makes the letters look simultaneously immovable and dynamic, like a majestic big cat ready to pounce. Its robust letterforms drive the eye forward; the italic styles in particular project speed. Open apertures and large counterforms ensure that text remains perfectly legible in small sizes. Stylistic sets allow you to tone down New Nord’s Frenchness by activating a two-storey lowercase ‘a’ and a more conventional ampersand. New Nord is well-suited for editorial design, advertising, packaging, and branding. It is available in nine weights with matching italics. Two additional extreme weights – New Nord Wide Heavy and Extended Heavy, both also with italics – bring the concept full circle.
